Question about writing music
  • AerockAerock September 2007
Mostly for Tony or Mike, but I think any of you might be able to answer this.

What do you do when you write a piece of music, work a lot at it and develop it into a little song or whatever, and then find out you accidentally and subconsciously lifted it almost exactly from some other song already made. I spent the last four to five hours or so working on this bit and my girlfriend mentioned it sounded like something Queens of the Stone Age would do. At first I took it as a compliment because he writes really catchy and engaging melodies so that only encouraged me. After a while it seemed it did sound a little bit too much like them, but I didn't know from what because I haven't listened to them in at least 4 months. Turns out the rhythm and timing is exactly the same, and the notes are really close, to The Blood is Love.

Basically, what do you do if that happens? I feel like I'm just ripping them off if I just tinker with it to mask it's origins, but I don't feel like writing anything else because that riff is all I can think about.

I just typed a pretty long response to this and Firefox crashed... I'll elaborate later, but the short version is:

It might be worth it to just let it go for now. In my experience things like that will still bother you even if you change it enough that no one else notices. Then again it depends on how much you like your part. If the idea of just trashing it seems worse than possibly wasting some time working on it... it's probably worth giving it a shot.

I ended up just moving it and adding stuff to it. It doesn't sound as cool as it did, but now it has it's own feel.

The main similarity it had was the beats were 1&2 3&4&1&2 ...etc which is exactly what the blood is love was. I'm sure they're not the first band ever to make a riff with those timings, but my note placement was nearly identical. I just ended up moving it an octave lower and had some slides/fillers in it.

    Thanks for the reply.

It would be nice to have the skills to be able to write something in order to hate it when that happens............but I don't.
