    Sooooooooo, uhhhhh. How's it goin'?

I finally listened to the first few tracks from Every Red Heart Shines Towards the Red Sun by Red Sparowes the other day. I don't hate it so far, but I definitely don't like it as much as Matt and some other people on here. When it comes to epic instrumental tunes, I think I still prefer Explosions in the Sky.

Anyone else listen to anything new lately? Anyone want to say anything at all?
  • AerockAerock March 2010
I haven't been listening to much of anything new lately. I don't know if it's lack of looking or lack of good stuff being out, so I've been getting more into stuff I have that I didn't give enough attention to before. I'm getting into Frou Frou, Portishead and Firewater a lot more lately, even a little bit of John Lennon but it's hard to find the really good songs in the mountain of crap he put out.

I did check out a couple of the new Deftones songs on youtube, and I gotta say I really really like it. I was never that much into Deftones after Adrenaline (I respected Around the Fur and White Pony; it just didn't click with me), but I'm digging this stuff a lot.
  • tommitommi April 2010
I saw Mono (Japanese post-rock band) live, so I've been listening to them a lot before and after. They're good. Kinda like Explosions in the Sky, but a bit better (in my opinion, obviously).

I've also been listening to The Smiths a bit lately. I used to only like a few songs by them, but lately I've been finding more and more to like.

I think I vaguely remember the first three bands being discussed here before, but I've never given them a listen. I'll have to remember to check them out. What do they sound like?

I don't know anything from John Lennon outside of his singles and I've never gotten into the Beatles. I have nothing against the Beatles, but I've just never made listening to their music a high priority to know whether I like their stuff or not.

I still haven't given the new Deftones stuff a listen. Their last two albums were so terrible that I just wasn't very excited for their new record.

Never heard of Mono. I like Explosions in the Sky, so I'm intrigued.

Never given The Smiths a chance either. I don't think I've ever heard a single song from them, actually. I always associated them with this group of kids in high school I didn't care for because a couple of them wore their band shirts. I know it's kind of ridiculous, but it's hard to shake my notion that I'd be a tool if I listened to them.

Their fans are often tools, and Morrissey himself seems like one, too. Doesn't bother me much, though.
  • Listening to a lot of Scar Symmetry recently (just heard them recently, me likey)... early Clutch... I like Slash's new album... Deftones - Diamond Eyes is alright... a bit of Haste The Day... Skindred's Jumping The Shark EP... and i really like that Ellie Goulding song Starry Eyed.

A fair bit of Dio, and from yesterday, a lot of Slipknot too.

I've never heard any of those bands except for Nick Cave and that's only because The Mars Volta covered one of his songs. That Mew album title is a mouthful.

I don't really listen to much new.

I've been listening to 3's Revisions a lot. It came out in '09, but I didn't hear it until a month or so ago. The album is kind of like a cross between Coheed and Cambria and Def Leppard. I dig it. I haven't gotten around to listening to any of 3's other stuff yet, but I understand it's pretty different than Revisions. More progressive or something. I certainly dig their poppy side, though.

I decided that I don't really like the Coheed and Cambria. Too dark and metally. I get bored halfway through the record.

The new Minus the Bear is awesome. It's not as progressive as Planet of Ice was, but it's still very enjoyable. It's more like Menos El Oso.

I downloaded the new Dead Letter Circus, but I haven't given it a listen yet. Anyone spun that one yet?

Any day now the unreleased Postman Syndrome record should arrive. I doubt any record coming out this year will be more awesome than that one. You know, unless Sinch decides to finally put out a new record. I'm not holding my breath on that one, though.

Man, calm down you two. Why don't you guys do something productive and actually talk about stuff you're listening to in the "What Are You Listening To" thread? You know that or start cracking some gay jokes. I can't get enough of those.

Picked up Clutch's 'Live At The 9:30' double DVD and Meshuggah's Alive CD/DVD over the weekend. Both awesome!!

Clutch playing the complete self-titled album is badassery! Should have gotten the Full Fathom Five DVD instead though, better setlist.

Love the cover art for Meshuggah's DVD:

That tagline is pretty amusing. I think I'm one of three people on the planet who like technical metal, but don't really care for Meshuggah. I just can't get into their music. I understand that they're very talented musicians and that their music is very complex, but the lack of emotion and melody really wear on me. It's work for me to listen to their music.

I've actually never listened to Clutch. One of these days, I'll have to get around to checking them out. You're not the only person I know who loves those guys.

Did you check out my cousin's vid? It very Wooten-esque if you dig that kind of stuff.
  • I haven't checked out the video yet, we went over our monthly internet useage, so we have to wait until the 10th when we get our broadband back. :(

I can upload you some Clutch if you want?
  • dandan June 2010
I also got that Meshuggah live CD/DVD but still haven't watched the whole DVD yet. And I haven't been listening to the CD at all... not sure why, but I should probably get on that.

Did you sign up for Dropbox? If so, I can share you my folder and you can just drop it in there. If not, then you probably should. It's way easier to use than yousendit. Here's a handy link: https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTU4MDYxMjQ5

I don't know how to figure out odds but I would say they are pretty slim. There's a chance we might not play any shows this year depending on how the rest of recording/mixing the album goes. We're just sort of taking it one step at a time and trying not to plan too far ahead.

Since there seems to be some action around here again, I thought I'd post something as well. I just couldn't think of anything, so I came to the WAYLT thread to post what my last.fm signature tells you anyway:

I'm currently listening to Woven Hand (or Wovenhand) a lot.

I don't even remember if I posted about them already on this forum or not, but they're awesome anyway. Saw them live last week and they were even more awesome live. Haven't really found much new music lately. And unlike RC, I didn't really care for the new Minus the Bear album. The new Wintersleep was a disappointment too.
  • RCSoulRCSoul June 2010

So far, Tommi's the only person that I know that's listened to the record. He usually doesn't steer me wrong, so I'm a little worried about it. I'm gonna download it and give it a spin, though.

This is the first album they have made since. They got screwed when Music For Nations got taken over by Zomba who subsequently fired all the bands on that label. Opeth got picked up by Roadrunner pretty much instantly, but Anathema were poor and couldn't afford to make an album for 6 years.

Actually they did make the acoustic album Hindsight, so I guess you could check that out.

It doesn't suck, it's just... well, like I said, disappointing. It's a bit on the boring side and they seem to have lost a lot of the emotion that made me like them in the first place. I haven't even downloaded it yet, just listened to it a couple of times on Spotify.

Yeah, you're wrong. Eternity was the change in sound... but as much as I like Eternity, Vince's strength as a vocalist wasn't quite there yet till the next album - even though it was always part of the charm of it for me. Both albums are a little darker than Judgement since Duncan was still in the band and was writing about half the material - but I'm a fan of his work so its hard for me to say if those albums are for you.

though if you do like his stuff then check out his other bands http://www.last.fm/music/Antimatter and http://www.last.fm/music/%C3%8Don - maybe i'll sign up for this drop box thing for you some day

You don't need to sign up for me. You should sign up because it's way easier to use than any file sharing method we've used in the past.

Maybe I'll have to give Alternative 4 a listen eventually. I didn't like their darker stuff on that compilation you made for me, so I'm not sure how I'll feel about the record.

I've downloaded too much stuff in past few months. There are so many albums I haven't gotten around to listening to or haven't given more than one listen. Ugh.

Yeah, you're wrong. Alternative 4 is only a bit heavier and darker than Judgement, but not by much in my opinion. Eternity isn't "black metally" either, but I don't like that one that much. Like Mark said, the vocals aren't quite there yet, and in general the songs are much weaker as well. And the sound. But Alternative 4 is great and you should definitely check it out. Can't guarantee you'll like it, but I can say that I do.

there were a lot of good songs on it, despite a couple of bland pop songs (i.e. oblivion), but it seemed to lack the cohesiveness and atmosphere that untitled oozes of.

Heh, Oblivion was my favorite song on WTTNS. I'll give you that it doesn't really sound like a Wintersleep song, but I like it anyway.

I definitely feel you with the lack of cohesiveness. For me, WTTNS was a collection of some good songs. Untitled was a great album.

New Inheritors is like elvato's mom on a Saturday night. It just blows continuously.

Been listening to the last Novembre album a lot - The Blue. I must say, it's pretty much nothing like I expected it to be. Materia was catchy but "meh" so I never gave the band another listen after that. But after randomly reading so many reviews praising The Blue I thought I'd give it a listen and damn... I'm floored. It's SO good. It's all I've been listening to for the last 2 weeks. It's that good.

It really grows on you after repeated listens and you uncover more and more the more you listen to each track. It well and truly is one of the most beautiful and sonically "complete" albums I've heard in a while. By which I mean, it has everything - melancholy, melody, sorrow, heaviness, clean sung vocals, growls, progressive structures, atmosphere. Just amazing. I'm pretty sure if noone else, Tommi will love it. Throw away all your preconceptions about the band and give it a listen. You'll be surprised.

Another album that's taken me completely by surprise is Anathema's We're Here Because We're Here. Judgement and Eternity being the only albums of theirs I've heard before this, I really didn't expect something this... how do I put it... beautiful? It's gorgeous! And so calming... I'm slowly but steadily falling in love with it. It makes me wanna go back and listen to A Fine Day To Exit just to see what else this band is capable of. Anyone else listened to this yet?

I haven't heard it yet, but I find it surprising that you find it surprising that it's beautiful if you've actually listened to Judgement? You don't find Judgement to be beautiful?
  • RaZoRRaZoR July 2010
Of course I recall enjoying Judgement but maybe I chose my words wrong in describing this album in relation to it... Judgement had a different vibe to it. This album sounds similar and yet different. Overall it has a more easy "melodious" atmosphere to it. Or maybe I'm just rambling because I haven't listened to Judgement in years. I was in a different place back then. I do recall the title track being positively kick-ass. Maybe I should go back and listen to it again.

But the new album just keeps getting better with each listen! I've only been listening to it a couple of days but it's quickly becoming the only one I'm listening to at all... just like Novembre's album a month back.
  • RaZoRRaZoR July 2010
I'm starting to think We're Here Because We're Here could quite possibly be my album of the year. It's just... inspiring, breathtaking, beautiful, warm-fuzzy-feeling-inducing, ear-candy!

I find myself listening to it through 50% of the day and it's all I listen to nowadays.

I haven't had this kind of a feeling about an album since Dredg's El Cielo, Sigur Rós's Ágætis byrjun or Explosion in the Sky's The Earth is Not a Cold Death Place.

HIGHLY recommended to anyone who enjoys the above mentioned bands. or Anathema. That would work too.
