Big Day Out...
  • Satan+McBaconSatan McBacon November 2005
Fiiiiiiiiiiiinally the second announcement of bands for '06 has been released.
So, now that we have a full line-up I've finally decided that - Yes, I am going (even thou there's only 13 'the' bands playing).

I was going to post the whole line-up but...
    a) there's probably only me and my shoe that really care.
and b) Christ, I've got to do some work before my ass gets fired.

Anyway, these are the bands I wanna see:
    Mudvayne
Blindspott (first time i'll see these guys with the new line-up and i'll probably hear some new stuff too)
    The White Stripes
    The Living End
    Iggy Pop And The Stooges
    Kings Of Leon
    Cog (WTF, only playing Aus!)
    The Mars Volta
    Shihad (The one and only)
Wolfmother (heard these guys the other day, sounded cool)
Fat Freddy's Drop (great Dub band)
    and
Pluto - These guys blow me away everytime I see them
  • KiljaedenKiljaeden November 2005
Pretty much the worst Lineup I've ever seen. I want to see Mars Volta again. I also want to see Mudvayne again. I might see them in Texas in December. All the rest are pure crap.
  • Satan+McBaconSatan McBacon November 2005
C'mon, what about Iggy? and Shihad?
  • MARK%21MARK! November 2005
    I'd watch
    mars volta
    cog
    shihad

    thats about all
  • adam+%28h.%29adam (h.) November 2005
I think I'd only bother to go see Cog, Mudvayne, and The Living End.
    So not worth going.
Hopefully Cog will stop to do a sideshow in Melbourne though.
  • Satan+McBaconSatan McBacon November 2005
Does Sydney usually sellout so quickly?
  • MARK%21MARK! November 2005
nowadays. people go for the event, not the bands. hi 5 could headline and it would still sell out
  • Satan+McBaconSatan McBacon November 2005
    If 'High 5' headlined, I'd go. :D
  • "MARK!":

    I'd watch
    mars volta...

I want to see Mars Volta again.

Mars Volta? You mean those European Techno artists? I thought they broke up? Is it some sort of reunion tour?
  • Satan+McBaconSatan McBacon December 2005
Nah, The Mars Volta are yanks - They're the remains of 'At The Drive-In' when they disbanded.
You might be thinking of Apex Theory, or you could be thinking of another band - I've been wrong once before.
  • Cedric Bixler stated in an interview: "The Volta is taken from a Federico Fellini book about his films, what he characterizes as a changing of scene, a new scene to him is called Volta. Y'know, changing of time and the changeover. And Mars, we're just fascinated by science-fiction so and it's something that ultimately looked as in anything I write, its meaning is always up to the listener. As the way we write songs and words, if it looks great on paper then to us it's like painting, so if it looks good meaning the second then people usually have a better interpretation than we ever would." Additionally, Omar has stated that Mars is a reference to the Roman god of war. The is used to disambiguate the band from a group of European Techno artists that previously took the name "Mars Volta".

    Ahhh, theres two of them...

They're half of the remains. It's like when Jimi Hendrix played for the Isley Brothers. Just because Jimi Hendrix left, doesn't mean he plays music like the Isley Brothers. The Isley Brothers kept playing crap (ie Sparta) and Jimi Hendrix rocked us to the core. I haven't even SEEN my core, and Hendrix is fucking rocking it? That takes balls. That's how awesome Jimi was.
  • RCSoulRCSoul December 2005
    I think Sparta broke up.
  • AerockAerock December 2005
My eye sheds a single tear of mourning.
  • Satan+McBaconSatan McBacon December 2005
Didn't the other guys go their separate ways and left Omar & Cedric the Entertainer to it? So they made The Mar Volta?
  • KiljaedenKiljaeden December 2005
Sparta + Mars Volta = At The Drive-In

I didn't know that Sparta broke up. I've heard nothing.

And damn Mars Volta sideshow sold out. I didn't buy a ticket cos I don't know if i'll be back or not. But I want to see them damnit.
  • RCSoulRCSoul December 2005
I'm fairly sure that At The Drive In broke up because their guitarist (Omar) and singer (Cedric) wanted to get more experimental while the other guys just wanted to keep making music like they were because they were becoming successful.

I've actually suffered through Sparta live . . . ugh.

    ::shudders::

And Sparta didn't actually break up like I thought. One of the guys who was in At The Drive In quit the band to join The Mars Volta. The rest of them are still trying to push forward.
  • IdentityTheftIdentityTheft December 2005
Sparta far > ATDI 1000000 times > The Mars Volta

I'm certainly not going to the BDO...not one band I'd pay even $5 to see let alone $100....
  • RCSoulRCSoul December 2005
I think you have your signs reversed. In fact, I would revise that equation to read.

The Mars Volta > ATDI > Licking ball sweat > Sparta

I don't like ATDI, but given the choice I'd rather listen to them than lick ball sweat. I can't say the same for Sparta.
  • AerockAerock December 2005
I'd rather listen to ball sweat than ATDI because sweating balls don't produce sound.
  • RCSoulRCSoul December 2005

    Agreed.
  • Satan+McBaconSatan McBacon December 2005
I thought At The Drive In were cool? better than The Mars Volta...
  • MARK%21MARK! December 2005
i much prefer The Mars Volta, but i thought some ATDI stuff was pretty cool. sparta were kind of ok for a couple of songs

i gpt tix to the mars volta gig :)

I can't tell if you're joking around or not. I was. Sorry if I offended you or anything.

Nah, I was joking too. It's cool, man :)

I read your moving to London? In with your Brother.
  • Satan+McBaconSatan McBacon January 2006
Yep, only till I get settled, then i'll find a flat or something.
  • Satan+McBaconSatan McBacon January 2006
Well, I've finally recovered from Big Day Out (sort of) and I had an awesome time as usual.

Got to Ericsson Stadium about 1pm just in time to Pluto. After Pluto was The Living End who kick arse like only they do, always a great show. We snuck off before Living End finished their set to partake in some illegal activities.
We then walked post-haste to the main stage to catch Mudvayne (who came out to the Imperial March from Star Wars), they kicked into 'Determined' and I raced into the pit to jump around like a monkey - it was great. I ended up being 2 people back from the Bassist, who rules.
After the 'Vayne I sat in the sun for a bit so my shirt could dry out, we then made our way up to the food stalls behind the west stand and we were surprised to see Butter Chicken on sale! Godamnit, I love Butter Chicken almost as much as Adam West loves his Taffy - and he is a man who loves his Taffy.
We blew off Kings Of Leon and Blindspott to check out the other stages and so I could catch up with one of my mates who moved to Wellington (7-8 hours drive from Auckland) a couple years ago.
We then went up to the Essential stage where Henry Rollins was doing a Spoken Word/Rant/Standup Comic routine, he was actually pretty funny and inspiring, if you get a chance check out his rants.
We then migrated down to the main stage to catch the last of Shihad (I've seen them at least 10 times now, so we went to Henry Rollins instead) we then moved to the R18 area down the back of the stadium, where you go to get tanked, and smoked a spliff with my Welly mate whilst Franz Ferdinand were rocking out in the distance (didn't sound to good from where we were).
After those sharply dressed Scots left the stage, the man - Iggy Pop, and the Stooges came out. That man is a pure entertainer - he had everyone in the crowd moving/dancing and he was running around the stage himself like he was still in his 20s. Such energy. Awesome.
After the Stooges was the White Stripes who, apart from their backdrop, were pretty meh. There was something missing (don't say ''a bassist''), whether they just weren't into it or not but they were a bit of a letdown.
After that we (slowly) moved up to the Green stage where Fat Freddy's Drop were closing the show - after 15mins of trying to get as close a possible and realising we weren't getting anywhere, we left to go see 2manydjs in the Boiler Room who were pretty cool for what they were. They also kept playing parts of "Funky Town" which would get me all excited till I'd realise they weren't going to play it, they were just messing with me. Bastards :)

BDO 2006 highs: Mudvayne, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, The Living End and Henry Rollins, the strange fellow who gave me some Oregano as we were walking to the BDO, Butter Chicken.
BDO 2006 lows: The White Stripes, $4.50 bottles of water, no "Funky Town".

That was my last Big Day Out for awhile, which is sad... but hey, i'll be heading to Reading, Download, Glastonbury and Wakken Open Air so hopefully they can fill the void. :)

PS. Don't take the legal party pill "Silver Bullet", you won't sleep for a couple of days...
  • KiljaedenKiljaeden February 2006
I ended up seeing Mudvayne and The Mars Volta sideshows.
Both were brilliant. Mudvayne played a better set/show last year though. They cut the set short by a lot. 1hr15mins. Last time it was near 2hrs.
Mars Volta were awesome. They went on for like 2hrs30mins. I can't remember since the time went so fast. They are definately a band you would want to check out. Cedric ripped his pants also which I found humourous.

Howdy, Stranger!
