Top 10 Films of the Past Decade
• elvato87elvato87 January 2010
This one was really tough.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The Prestige
Memento
Batman Begins
The Dark Knight
Man on Fire
The Departed
500 Days of Summer
Stranger Than Fiction
No Country For Old Men

Honorable Mention:
City of God, Lost in Translation, Kill Bill(s), Children of Men, In Bruges, There Will Be Blood, The Hurt Locker...
I hate this list, there were lots of good films.
• dandan January 2010
I really want to do this list, but it's gonna be hard. Some of those would probably be on my list. I need to get a job where part of my job is to make best of lists. Then I could actually spend some time on this...
• AerockAerock January 2010
I thought this list was going to be hard but when I found out which of my favorite movies were released this decade I learned that most of them are actually from 2000 or later, so it was a bit easier to narrow it down. A lot of great movies came out but I haven't seen a significant percentage, so if I were doing it again later it might change, but these are the movies I never got sick of and usually can't go a year without seeing them at least once, and all of these I've seen several times. Organized by favorites of specific genre so every type of movie gets a fair shake.

Favorite Action/Adventure Movies:
The Dark Knight
Pirates of the Caribbean
Kill Bill 1&2
Constantine
all three Lord of the Rings
Gladiator
Crank!
Crank 2![/list:u]
Favorite Animated Movies:
Shrek
Ratatouille
A Scanner Darkly[/list:u]
Favorite Comedies:
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Mean Girls
Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back
Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle
Waiting
Grandma's Boy
Dude, Where's My Car?
Smiley Face (yes, it appears I enjoy stoner movies)
I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell
Anchorman[/list:u]
Favorite Documentaries:
Man on Wire
March of the Penguins[/list:u]
Favorite Drama Movies:
28 Days (I still think this is Sandra Bullock's best acting)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Memento
Almost Famous
Wristcutters: A Love Story
White Oleander
Unbreakable[/list:u]
Favorite Horror Movies:
The Ring
The Exorcism of Emily Rose
The Burrowers
Dead Birds
Jennifer's Body (I actually just watched this for the first time last night, but it is amazing. I didn't realize until twenty or thirty minutes into the movie, but since it's written by Diablo Cody, the movie becomes Juno + Evil Dead II. Hilarious and never-ending one-liners worthy of Bruce Campbell comparisons, and the movie stays away from the retarded horror movie clichés while embracing the awesome ones, and Megan Fox. Watch it with friends)[/list:u]
Favorite Musicals:
Sweeney Todd
Across the Universe[/list:u]
Favorite Chick Movies I liked anyway:
Mean Girls
The Holiday
Miss Congeniality
White Oleander
13 Going on 30[/list:u]
Favorite Sports Movies:
The Wrestler
Remember the Titans
The Hammer
Invincible[/list:u]
Movies EVERYONE loved that I would be happy if I never saw or heard of again:
Lost in Translation
Equilibrium
Shaun of the Dead
Lost in Translation
Donnie Darko
The Departed
Lost in Translation
and that retarded Bill Murray/Scarlett Johansson movie where all they do is have awkward conversations in bars. If I wanted to see that, I would go to bars and eavesdrop. At least the soundtrack would be better.
[/list:u]
Favorite movie about an evil 400 year old talking turkey that butchers teenagers in the woods and later gets trapped in a barrel of radioactive waste:
Thankskilling[/list:u]

And my favorite 5 of the decade:
5. Kill Bill
4. Mean Girls
3. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
2. Wristcutters: A Love Story
1. Snatch

edit: I completely ignored the top 10 part. I saw it as more as a guideline.

Dude, that list kicked ass. Very good.
• RCSoulRCSoul January 2010
Maybe if I ever finish my best of the 00s music list I'll start work on this. There were a lot of movies that I enjoyed that came out this decade.

So, most of your favorite movies of the past decade are from 2000 or later? Which one's aren't?
• AerockAerock January 2010
I'm still working on that list, but it's going to take some creative math to finish.
• tommitommi January 2010
Man, I can't do this one. I'm not really very critical with movies and like some of the crappiest films and dislike some of the finest for random reasons or usually for no reason at all. It would be an impossible list for me, or just too much work as I would have to do like a top 250.

But, It's good to know that I'm not the only adult male in the world who enjoys crap like Mean Girls and 13 going on 30.
• ZoeZoe January 2010
how was "I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell"?
the guy they got to play tucker max kind of annoyed me, but i am not sure why...
• AerockAerock January 2010
IHTSBIH was awesome, and so was the actor that played Tucker. All three guys were hilarious, but the Drew/Slingblade character definitely stole the show.

Better than The Hangover.
• ZoeZoe January 2010
i'll definately have to check it out. jesse bradford plays sligblade and i heart him.

my list - though i'm sure i've left many out

1 Inland Empire (2006) - David Lynch masterpiece, hard to follow and understand which to me automatically puts it above the dreary films we're told to watch. oh and did i mention it is almost as good as Lost Highway.

2 Romanzo Criminale (2005) - best 'italian gangster' film since Casino or Goodfellas. Epic like the Godfather.

3 Mulholland Drive (2001) - Lynch again. Very memorable scenes...

4 Requiem for a Dream (2000) - almost forgot about this film. eye opener. Game show hallucinations are funny and shocking at the same time.

5 Kill Bill 1&2 (2003-4) - can only be seen as one film. Best Tarantino of the last decade. Budd speaking to Bill: "she deserves her revenge. And we deserve to die. But then again, so does she."

6 Night Watch (2004) - best 'modern-day' vampire film, showed hollywood that you can make better films for the cost of one of their catering bills - which is always good.

7 The Dreamers (2003) - takes some watching to get past the exterior and understand what it's about - to me anyway, probably had something to do with Eva Green distracting me...

8 Sin City (2005) - original in film design, awesome dialogue, can't see another film being plausible by copying the style.

9 Casino Royale (2006) - re-invented the James Bond series and brought it back to the 'real-world'.

and fighting out for no.10

Gomorrah (2008)
The Hole (2001)
House of 1000 Corpses (2003)
Mystic River (2003)
Broken Flowers (2005)

I don't know why, but I'm getting the impression that you're a huge fan of David Lynch. I honestly haven't seen many Lynch movies to have an opinion either way of his work.

I just recently added Night Watch to my Netflix queue. The premise sounded intriguing to me. I think there's a sequel that I added, too. Have you seen that one?

Maybe one day, I'll be motivated enough to do one of these lists. Maybe it'll be the day when someone else motivated enough to do a real Best of the Aughts list like Aerock and I.

Yep, that's right. Lost Highway (1997) is my all time favorite film - Some people get his work, others don't. He's one of those love or hate directors - but i think most would respect that he's at least pushing cinema boundries.

Yeah the sequel is Day Watch, another well made film with brilliant visual effects that are better than the first - though i don't rate it as highly for the script could have been worked on a bit more, and some of the acting was a little strange at times - but i think that could be partly because they're russian films and it's hard to get emotions when you're reading subtitles (oh - another note, Night Watch was dubbed english, don't think Day Watch was, but I find the dubbing terrible, personal choice really, but i like to watch things the way they were made, it should have different audios/languages on the DVD) - there are supposed to be four films altogether - next one should be called Dusk Watch or Twilight Watch, and the last one will be Final Watch - there are rumours that they'll never happen - if not, well i've just started one.

Best of the Aughts list

I'll do that eventually

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of dubbing either. Unless it's a Japanese monster flick. Then I prefer it dubbed.

You should. I always enjoy reading other people's lists. Especially if I find something I like and haven't heard previously. You don't have to go all out and do a top 50 like I did. Feel free to steal my layout if you want to be lazy. Certain other members do it all the time *coughaerockcoughcough* Sorry, tickle in my throat and I feel the need to type out extraneous noises I make while typing.

I didn't steal your layout; you just preemptively plagiarized mine.

I don't know if I get him, but I love Lost Highway and Mulholland Dr... Blue Velvet was decent, but didn't do much for me and Wild at Heart I just didn't like too much at all. That's all I've seen of his work (except for Dune, which I like, but don't really count as "his work"). Well, I did see a couple episodes of Twin Peaks when I was pretty young... don't remember much about it...
